Artist Bio
Many times, I feel the essential energy that brings a sculpture into being flows not from me but through me. I reckon that art can be a repository of ineffable spiritual values. My engagement with the materials is a dialogue of two natures: that of the material and my intuitional sense of touch, drawing and my vision of beauty. I work not merely willfully but allow the potential unique to each material to speak as well, to let their nuances prevail. I act in concert with that dialogue. Drawing and making maquettes in its widest sense, play a major role in how I act. The ultimate challenge is to articulate and transform the materials and to claim space in such a way that all the elements maintain their integrity yet transcend their inherent identity to cohere into a presence imbued with autonomous life, manifest as a metaphor of nature, reveries and aspirations. Reaching an harmonic balance between mind, linearity and simplicity is my aim. The feelings coming from observing the sculpture are of transparency, serenity and calm.
It is my affirmation of the boundless human spirit and nature.
In my earliest youth, I remember having a sense of infinite esthetic sense……….. as a student admiring the sculpturers in Florence and falling in love with those beautiful pieces at the Bargello or the Academy. Here in Cambridge I have discovered a way to express my inner conflicts, of being a foreigner in another country, rediscovering my native Italian esthetic sense, speaking a different language and interpreting another culture, the difficulty of liaising with people in a synthesis which transforms into serenity in searching for gentle natural lines and space within the stone. Searching………………… Searching beauty and serenity…………these are the sources of sustaining strength in pursuing my vision as an artist. |
